The Ten Commandments

-Overview-

This study of the Ten Commandments, Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21, will begin by answering a few questions. Were the Commandments nailed to the cross? Were they done away with, abolished, through the sacrifice of Jesus? Do we have to obey them now or are they just guidelines for us? Read more…

The First Commandment

(Exodus 20:2-3; Deuteronomy 5:6-7)
I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of
the land of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
You shall have no other gods before Me.

When a builder plans to erect a building or a … Read more…

The Second Commandment

(Exodus 20: 4-6; Deuteronomy 5: 8-10)

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the inequity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that … Read more…

The Third Commandment

(Exodus 20:7; Deuteronomy 5:11)

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.

The first commandment showed us that we are to worship our Creator God. We are to worship Him, revere Him, glorify Him and obey Him. We must worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24).

The second commandment showed us … Read more…

The Fourth Commandment

Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall not do any work, you nor your son, nor your daughter, your manservant, nor your maidservant, nor your livestock, nor the stranger within your gates; for in six days the Lord made the heaven and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and sanctified it. (Exodus 20; 8-11) … Read more…

The Fifth Commandment

Honor your father and your mother so that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God gives you.

(Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16)

“Master, which commandment is the great commandment in the Law?” And Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest … Read more…

The Sixth Commandment

You shall not murder.

(Exodus 20:13; Deuteronomy 5:17)

The sixth commandment is the only commandment that shows the effect of sin immediately. When a person is murdered the loss of life and that persons loss to family and friends is almost instantaneous.

Let’s go back to the beginning. The first recorded murder in the Bible was committed by Cain, the eldest son of Adam and Eve. In Genesis 4 we learn that Cain was a tiller of the ground and his younger brother Abel was a keeper of sheep. “It came to pass that Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground. And Abel also brought of the firstlings of his flockRead more…

The Seventh Commandment

You shall not commit adultery

(Exodus 20:14; Deuteronomy 5:18)

The seventh commandment, like the fifth, deals with a personal family relationship and how to protect that relationship. The fifth commandment showed the importance of honoring our parents and how it relates to and grows into our relationship of honoring our Creator God.

The seventh commandment tells us the way to protect the honor and sanctity of our marriage. As we learned in our study of the fifth commandment the basic building block of any society… Read more…

The Eighth Commandment

You shall not steal.

(Exodus 20:15 Deuteronomy 5:19)

Seems pretty straight forward. You shall not steal. There is nothing to separate it or qualify it. No “if’s”, “ands” or “buts”, or “under specific or certain circumstances”. Just, you shall not steal. Can it be that easy? Not with man and his infinite self-proclaimed wisdom.

We should note right off although it does not say it, it also implies a person has the… Read more…

The Ninth Commandment

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor

(Exodus 20:16 Deuteronomy 5:20)

In the 1950’s there was a weekly series on TV called Superman. The introduction stated, in part, “Superman, who stands for truth, justice and the American way.” We have lost something along the journey, I think. Truth and justice do not seem to be the American way or any other country’s way, for that matter. It would seem, “…, the ancient serpent who is calledRead more…

The Tenth Commandment

You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, nor covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his manservant nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.

(Exodus 20:17 Deuteronomy 5:21)

Do Not Covet. Some of the language sounds so outdated. Maybe it does not pertain to us anymore. First off, remember one of the rules of Bible study, who is the passage directed to and what is the context? This, and all the commandments, were spoken… Read more…

The Ten Commandments

-Review-

For this is the love of God; that we keep His commandments;

And His commandments are not burdensome.

1 John 5:3

With our study of the Ten Commandments we have seen they are as important and relevant today as they ever have been.

We need to remember Jesus, in His own words said He did not come to earth to do away with the law (commandments) or the Prophets of God, He expected us to obey and keep them. (Note: The Law and The ProphetsRead more…
